NBASLH Partners with NAACP of Portsmouth for 2016 Literacy Campaign

While our Convention will be hosted in the city of Virginia Beach, the neighboring city of Portsmouth is a local area of need. The NAACP Reads program seeks to improve early literacy in students from Pre-K to third grade in the Portsmouth area. To support their efforts we are planning to have a book drive to increase the access to books for children grades Pre-K through third in the Portsmouth area.

To participate in the NBASLH Cares project, you may donate either books or cash.

We challenge all NBASLH affiliates, associated Universities and members to make a donation or bring a book to support the literacy accessible for all children in the Portsmouth area!

You can bring donations with you to the NBASLH 2016 Convention. All donations will be collected by 3 pm on Friday April 15, 2016 at the registration desk. In addition you can mail donations to the NBASLH Office, to be received by April 7, at PO Box 779, Pennsville, NJ 08070.

NBASLH 2015 Cares - Jere Baxter Middle School

The National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing CARES about the communities that we serve. Our commitment is to serve our local, national and global community through acts of service. This year, we have identified a need in our host convention city.

Jere Baxter Middle School, in Nashville, Tennessee, has been identified as a "turn around" school. Ninety-two percent of the children were identified as candidates for free and reduced meals. The remaining 8% did not return their forms. Miriam Harington is the principal of the school and she stated, "she has not known poverty until she began working at this school."

In addition, Ms. Harington expressed that it is very difficult for many of the children's parents to purchase school clothes.

NBASLH would like to make an impact in this school and community through the donation of gift cards, which will be used to purchase clothing items.

Our goal is that all attendees will make a gift card donation of $10. Ms. Harington suggested Walmart or Old Navy gift cards. However, monetary donations are also acceptable.

We will collect all donations at the registration desk during the convention.

Thank you for making a huge difference in the lives of the children and families of Jere Baxter Middle School. Let's show Nashville that NBASLH CARES!

All donations are tax deductible.
