Academia Has A Problem: An Open Forum for Expressing the State of Black Women in Academia and Finding Collective Hearing

The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman.

The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman.

The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.

----Malcolm X

This quote very much demonstrates the challenges and barriers that Black women experience in academia at the intersection of anti-blackness and sexism.
In the news, there has been heightened visibility of the weathering, racial battle fatigue, and mental health trauma experienced by
Black women navigating higher education environments, including the recent passing of Dr. Antoinette "Bonnie" Candia-Bailey,Vice President of Student Affairs at Lincoln University,
who tragically died by suicide after multiple complaints of workplace bullying and harassment at work.

As the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) consists of professionals, academics, and
students representing audiology and speech-language pathology, this event will provide a safe place for members,
in particular Black women in academia and those who support them, to gather, share experiences and strategies,
and seek healing in community.
This event, moderated by Dr. Dani Scott, Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University Mankato,
will feature a distinguished speaker, Dr. Bonnie Brown, former Interim President of Northern Kentucky University.

This event will not be recorded or live-streamed to provide an intimate space. The event is open to NBASLH members only.
